เป็นนกขนาดใหญ่ ส่วนมากมักจะมีขนสีดำสลับขาว ทั่วโลกมี 55 ชนิด แพร่กระจาย
ในแถบเขตร้อน ของทวีปอัฟริกา และเอเชีย
ประเทศไทยมีนกเงือก 13 ชนิด ซึ่งในอุทยานแห่งชาติแก่งกระจาน ในเขตเพชรบุรี
มี 6 ชนิด ได้แก่

นกเงือกเป็นนกผัวเดียวเมียเดียว มีลักษณะการทำรังที่แปลกจากนกอื่น คือ เมื่อถึงฤดูกาลทำรัง นกคู่ผัวเมียจะพากันหารัง ซึ่งได้แก่ โพรงไม้ตามต้นไม้ใหญ่ เช่น ต้นยาง ที่อยู่ในที่ลับตา เมื่อตัวเมียเข้าไปอยู่ในโพรง จะทำความสะอาดแล้วเริ่มปิดปากโพรง ด้วยวัสดุต่าง ๆ เช่น ดิน เปลือกไม้ ตัวเมียจะขัง ตัวอยู่ภายในเพื่อออกไข่เลี้ยงลูก
