หมวกอินเดียแดงในอเมริกาสมัยก่อน ลำตัวมีลายขวางสีน้ำตาลอ่อน หรือขาวสลับดำ ปากยาว
เรียวโค้ง ตัวเมียมีขนาดเล็กกว่า และสีจางกว่าตัวผู้เล็กน้อย ขณะแม่นก กกลูกอยู่ในรัง จะมีต่อมขับ
ของเหลวที่มีกลิ่นเหม็นออกมากลิ่นนี้มาจากต่อมน้ำมันไซ้ขน เชื่อกันว่านกกะรางหัวขวาน ใช้กลิ่น
เหม็นนี้ป้องกันตัวไม่ให้สัตว์อื่นเข้าใกล้
